Actos and its Uses

Generic Actos is a clinically proven, once-a-day prescription medicine available to lower blood glucose levels in people with type 2 diabetes.

Generic Actos contains the active ingredient pioglitazone hydrochloride, which is an antidiabetic medicine used to treat people with type 2 or non-insulin dependent diabetes (NIDDM).

Generic Actos is used to treat people with type 2 diabetes, particularly overweight people, whose blood sugar is not sufficiently controlled by diet and exercise alone, and who cannot take metformin. (Metformin is the standard first-line medicine for overweight people with type 2 diabetes inadequately controlled by diet.)

Generic Actos is also used for people with type 2 diabetes whose blood sugar is not controlled by the maximum doses of either metformin, or another type of antidiabetic medicine known as a sulphonylurea, for example gliclazide. In these cases pioglitazone is added to treatment with the oral antidiabetic already being taken. Actos can be used in combination with metformin (particularly in overweight people) or in combination with a sulphonylurea (only in people who cannot take metformin).

Generic Actos works by helping the body use its naturally produced insulin to use glucose as a fuel and reduce the harmful buildup of glucose in your blood.

Working Mechanism of Actos

In type 2 or non-insulin dependent diabetes (NIDDM) the cells of the body are resistant to the low levels of insulin circulating in the blood. Insulin would normally make the cells remove glucose from the blood.

Generic Actos helps to lower blood glucose levels by increasing the sensitivity of liver, fat and muscle cells, to insulin. This enables the cells to remove glucose from the blood more effectively. Actos also reduces the amount of glucose produced by the liver, and preserves the functioning of the cells in the pancreas (beta cells) that produce insulin. The overall effect of Generic Actos is therefore to help the body control blood sugar levels and prevent them becoming too high.

Actos Dose

Missed Dose of Actos

Take the missed dose of Actos as soon as you remember. If you do not remember until the next day, skip the missed dose and take only the next regularly scheduled dose of Actos. Do not take a double dose of Actos.

Excess Dose of Actos

Actos in excess dose does not show any symptoms.

Food and Drug interactions with Actos

• Generic Actos must not be used by people being treated with insulin, as this combination may increase the risk of heart failure.
• There may be an increased risk of fluid retention (oedema) if non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as diclofenac or ibuprofen are taken with Actos.
