Food and Drug interactions with Avandia

If Generic Avandia is used in dual or triple therapy, in combination with a sulphonylurea such as gliclazide, the chance of your blood sugar dropping too low (hypoglycaemia) may be increased. Your doctor may need to alter your dose of sulphonylurea to avoid this.

When Generic Avandia is used as triple therapy, in combination with Metformin and a sulphonylurea, there may also be an increased risk of fluid retention and heart failure. It may be more suitable to use insulin instead of triple therapy and your doctor should discuss this option with you.

There may be an increased risk of fluid retention (oedema) if non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as diclofenac or ibuprofen are taken with Generic Avandia.

Gemfibrozil may increase your blood level of rosiglitazone. If you are taking Avandia in combination with rosiglitazone your doctor may therefore need to lower your rosiglitazone dose, depending on your blood sugar levels.

The following medicines may decrease the blood level of Generic Avandia and make it less effective at lowering blood sugar:

• rifampicin
• carbamazepine
• phenytoin
• phenobarbital
• the herbal remedy St John's wort.

Contraindications with Avandia

Generic Avandia is contraindicated in the following conditions

• Current or previous heart failure
• Decreased liver function
• People receiving insulin treatment
• Pregnancy
• Breastfeeding
• Rare hereditary problems of galactose intolerance, the Lapp lactase deficiency or glucose-galactose malabsorption

• Low red blood cell count (anaemia)
• Increase in the level of fats e.g. cholesterol in the blood (hyperlipidaemia)

• Rash

• Disturbances of the gut such as indigestion, diarrhea, constipation, nausea, vomiting or abdominal pain
• Weight gain
• Dizziness
• Low blood glucose level (hypoglycaemia)
• Pins and needles (paraesthesia)
• Excessive fluid retention in the body tissues, resulting in swelling (oedema)
• Difficulty in breathing (dyspnoea)
• Decrease in the number of platelets in the blood (thrombocytopenia)
• Presence of glucose in the urine (glycosuria)
• Abnormal liver function
• Heart failure
